A Northern Irish Family Saga Novel centered on the McDermott and Frazer Household’s trajectory of Revenge, Rebellion, Religion and Redemption as a Post-Modernist, Ergodic and Experimental Work of Long Literary Fiction and Theological Fantasy.

WHITE CITY SONS NOVEL SYNOPSIS

White City Sons is a Northern-Irish Family Saga about Revenge, Rebellion, Religion and Redemption - as a Post-Modernist Experimental Work of Long Literary Fiction. In its episodic, non-linear and multiple first-person confessional approach to narrative, it focuses on the McDermott and Frazer households, their neighbours, friends, enemies and allies – all ‘claustrophobically’ living together in the rural town of Dungannon, County Tyrone - primarily during 1994, yet always looking backwards!

Love, grief, guilt and regret are focussed upon in the lead-up to the protagonists’ individual deaths – as they inhabit judgement rooms in Heaven, telling their stories to deconstructed grotesque versions of Angels and Demons. In these numerous rooms, these entities from the underworld and the afterlife work together in witnessing the storyteller’s gestures and mannerisms as they – in many strange, tried and tested ways – transcribe what may be true or unreliable words and situations.

The final draft of these transcripts will be given to God who, during the processes, becomes the omniscient yet absent additional narrator – explaining to the reader about the personas and the happenings within each room; the movements and antics of Heaven’s Angels and Fallen Angels in conjunction with the emotional states of those within the McDermott and Frazer families. This God will then be entrusted with final judgements whether we – the Readers – agree or disagree with his verdicts or viewpoints.

This is a Northern Irish Novel about the divisions between communities, here on earth and in the underworld and afterlife. It is an askew study of how all these characters and entities survive within the absurdities and the realities of Other and Togetherness.

WHITE CITY SONS NOVEL SUMMARY

PGH-dark.jpg

R.U.C Constable DOUGLAS EVANS is shot by his colleague RALPH FRAZER in 1982. The real target of Frazer's shot was the suspected Northern Irish Provisional member JOHN PATRICK MCDERMOTT who, in turn, uses EVAN’s gun to shoot and kill FRAZER.

Imprisoned, MCDERMOTT constantly thinks about and - through the trial and news footage - becomes obsessed with FRAZER's wife, JOAN.

JOHN PAT is released from prison in 1994 and his infatuation with JOAN becomes more heightened. He secretly - on 3 occasions - enters her home and rapes her, blackmailing her, that if she told anyone, he and his Boys would kill her son.

On the third occasion JOHN ‘ROCK’ FRAZER (JOAN and RALPH's son) witnesses MCDERMOTT exiting the house and when he enters, he finds his mother in a state of undress.

In his drug-induced, intoxicated state of mind, he believes that his mother is having an affair with MCDERMOTT. With pure rage, he beats and murders her.

Blaming her death on JOHN PAT MCDERMOTT, ROCK, as a member of the Battalion of Ulster Loyalists, recruits his comrades to seek out and kill MCDERMOTT. They soon find him and murder him in a pub along with his other pub regular friends.

JOHN PAT's sons (CHRISTY, PADDY, OLLY and CONNOR) begin their trajectory of revenge - which results in many deaths, many tales of redemption and at the end, new life - with each relaying their 1st person confessionals to specific Angels and Demons who Witness and Transcribe their Stories when in a stasis, inhabiting Heaven’s Judgement Rooms – overseen and supervised by an Omniscient yet absentee GOD.

The conclusion occurs when CHRISTY, the presumed last surviving main protagonist, is assassinated by the Battalion’s newest recruit MELANIE EVANS, DOUGLAS EVAN's grown Daughter, as he exits South Tyrone Hospital following the birth of his first child, SHANE.

DOUGLAS wakes from Coma.

GOD makes his judgment calls.
