"I attended a session on Sub-Relative Theater by Patrick Hughes at the Directors Lab, Lincoln Center, New York. The session explained Hughes' approach to developing work, mainly through his pre-rehearsal process and the collaborative nature of his projects. I found the way that he gives each department autonomy to develop their approach to projects to be particularly inspiring, especially since the structure of his Sub-Relative Theatre Practice to run separate elements of the pre-rehearsal process and collaborate with the entire cast and crew in an intensive way from the very first stages of the project. In addition, several of rehearsal techniques that Hughes demonstrated have been of great use to me in my own rehearsals.
